Amended law will put control of
Historic New Bridge Landing in local hands

Please voice your support!

An amendment to the law regarding HNBL will go a long way towards our
goal of enhancing one of our most treasured landmarks.
We need you to
take
3 minutes to support this legislation! Read on to learn how.

What is this about?

Historic New Bridge Landing is situated along the Hackensack River at the
southern end of River Edge. The Steuben House, Campbell Christie House,
Demarest House, iron swing bridge, General Store and surrounding
parklands comprise the site.  General Washington crossed the bridge on
his historic strategic retreat in 1776. In addition, the site was the scene of
numerous encampments and battles during the Revolution. The bridge is
often referred to as the “Bridge that Saved a Nation.” It is also the site of a
prehistoric Native American settlement. In short, New Bridge is one of the
most important historic sites in New Jersey and we need your help to ensure
that this national treasure gets the attention and care that it deserves.

The Historic New Bridge Landing Park Commission was established by state
statute in 1995 to have jurisdiction over the site and make decisions
affecting it. The Commission is made up of members from River Edge, New
Milford, Teaneck , Bergen County , NJDEP, the Blauvelt Demarest
Foundation and the Bergen County Historical Society.  The local members
of the Commission serve as volunteers.  They are a committed, dedicated
group of people who care deeply about the site and its monumental historic
significance.

Under existing law, the Commission coordinates and implements
development policies and other activities relating to the preservation and
recreational use of property at New Bridge Landing.  The Commission has
jurisdiction over properties in the member municipalities that make up New
Bridge . Although the current legislation gives broad power to the
Commission, it does not effectively address administration of the site, which
now rests with government officials who operate the site remotely.

At the behest of the Commission and with support from Governor Corzine,
Senators Loretta Weinberg and Gerald Cardinale introduced
bi-partisan
legislation that aims to transfer administrative control of New Bridge Landing
to those best suited for the task.  These officials understand that local
Commissioners are capable, “history-minded” individuals who possess a
thorough understanding and appreciation for the site and recognize its
enormous potential. But there are those in Trenton who want to maintain
the status quo and view this legislation as an encroachment on their “turf”.
